Zaostrog

Coast at Belvedere

Today we leave Belvedere after five nights and we had a really nice time here. It’s been great for both us and the dogs but we must continue our travels if we are to see the places we had planned. Our next target is the Peljevac peninsular but we need to catch a ferry from Ploce to Trpanj which is a crossing of about an hour. We have decided to drive down to a location near Ploce so that we can more easily get to the ferry in good time the next day, make the crossing, and then find a campsite on the peninsular. So the target today is just to find an overnight stop somewhere and we are heading for Zaostrog.

We could probably have got to Ploce much quicker and maybe saved a night stop-over if we had gone down the motorway but we wanted to travel down the coast road and enjoy the spectacular coastline that Croatia offers. Having left Belvedere, we stopped off at the Lidl just past Trogir for some provisions. The Lidl is built right alongside Split airport (which is much nearer Trogir that Split) and whilst Ruth got some groceries I stayed with the dogs and watched the planes take off and land from what only seemed a few metres away. The journey down to Zaostrog along the Adriatic Highway is beautiful. OK, it can be a bit slow at times but for us it was time well spent and it is quite easy to find nice little places to stop off to break the journey and have a bit of lunch.

Zaostrog is a nice little village with it’s houses spread out along the sea front, the usual kanobas, a mini-market, and small harbour for the local boats. There is a bit of a one-way system down from the highway but when we arrived a car was parked right in the middle of the road, a practice we had seen often on Italy. I tooted, and after a while someone came out to move the car and allow us through.

Camp Viter was quite nice, situated facing the beach, with very friendly staff and all the usual facilities. The sanitary block was a little basic but perfectly adequate whilst the pitches were compact and quite tightly spaced, Ok for when we were there in off-season but we wouldn’t have wanted to stay in the height of the season. We were only staying overnight so we pitched up and investigated the village with the dogs.

There is a nice walk along the sea front up along the village and then at the end is a pedestrian track which we think was probably the old Adriatic Highway at one time. We followed that for a while but chose not to partake in the various items of exercise equipment spread along the route. We found a nice small beach for Lily to have her usual play with ball and sea and then headed back to the site.

On an adjacent pitch was a UK motorhome and we got talking to them in the morning. They had been over to the Peljevac peninsular and were heading the other way and it was quite useful to chat with them about their views on the sites they had stayed at. We haven’t seen many Brits in Croatia at all so far so these are quite rare occasions.
